In this class you’ll confront the reality that sewing is actually the quickest step of any project. Calibrating your home machine is the first big battle. Master the fundamentals of a stitch by demystifying common mistakes that trip up sewists of all backgrounds.
Over 3 weeks, you’ll get to know your tools and the sewing processes intimately, all while applying what you learn to complete a fully realized pillowcase.
You’ll have space to personalize it however you like bold, minimal, quirky, cozy, or experimental all while staying focused on solid technique.
Designed for beginner and experienced sewists alike.

Upcycling: The Button-Front Shirt
(Intermediate)
Every shirt has a second act. This class is where it starts.
Part of a sustainability-focused series, this class uses the button-front shirt as both material and design library.
That old dress shirt or forgotten formalwear doesn't just bring fabric to the table; it arrives loaded with ready-made details: pockets, plackets, collars, cuffs, and buttons, which become design decisions the moment you learn to see them. Construction through deconstruction is the approach.
Whether you're drawn to plaid, stripes, chambray, or an Oxford weave, shirting comes with its personality built in. This course teaches you to give this lightweight fabric backbone, making thoughtful construction choices that bring your vision to life with intention and durability.
Open to sewists who have fully completed a Beginning course or have comparable experience.
Project: Kimono, apron, or other medium-sized accessory option.

Resist water! This winter!
Let’s be honest, in LA you’ll only ever need one raincoat. Skip the one you’d buy in a panic and sew the one you’ll actually need, all while picking up plenty of tips and tricks along the way.
A raincoat is a sewing project with a job to do: keep water out. Waxed cotton, dry oilskin, and waterproof synthetics don’t behave like the quilting cotton you learned on. Learn to tame tricky materials you’d be nervous to try on your own.
It all happens on a home sewing machine, no industrial gear required.
Your coat comes with patch pockets, a zipper closure, and snap fasteners in mid-length or long. We’ll bring out the hardware and hammers too, sewing zippers, setting snaps and grommets that make it easy to slip in and out of during a storm. An interior lining is optional and can be replaced with seam binding. And, as always, up-cycling is on the table!
Open to sewists who have fully completed a PINS Beginning course or have sewn a garment pattern from a commercial pattern before. Not your first project, but not your hardest. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about waterproof fabrics, zippers, snaps, and grommets along the way.
Project: Hooded Raincoat in mid-length or long.
